Applying directly or using a recruiter?

Applying directly or using a recruiter?

Why it pays to have someone in your corner

You've discussed a role with a recruiter that interests you. The firm sounds right, the opportunity appeals and you can see how it could fit into your career plans. But what value does a recruiter actually add once you've identified a role you'd like to pursue?

Quite a lot, particularly when they know the firm, understand the role and have taken the time to understand what you're looking for.

Having worked in legal recruitment for over a decade, I've seen how much happens beyond the job description. From understanding what a firm really wants to negotiating an offer, here's how the right recruiter can make a difference to your next career move.

1. You gain insight you won't find in the job advert

A job description tells you what a firm wants on paper. It doesn't necessarily explain why they're hiring, what the hiring partner is really looking for or what the opportunity could look like in practice.

Is there scope to progress to partnership? Is the firm looking for someone to develop a team or manage an established caseload? How flexible are they about working arrangements?

A recruiter with an established relationship with the firm can often answer these questions and give you a more rounded picture of the opportunity.

That insight helps you understand what you're being considered for, what matters most to the employer and whether the role aligns with your ambitions.

2. Your experience is presented in the right context

Your CV tells a prospective employer where you've worked, what you've done and how much experience you have. It doesn't always explain what motivates you, what you're looking for next or why you're considering a move.

A recruiter can put those details into context, highlighting the experience most relevant to the role and explaining what you could bring to the firm.

For senior appointments, where leadership, client relationships, business development and future ambitions can be just as important as technical experience, that context can be particularly valuable.

It's about more than forwarding a CV. It's about helping the firm understand the person behind it and why the opportunity could be a good match.

3. You have someone negotiating on your behalf

Salary is an obvious consideration, but the overall package matters too.

Perhaps you're looking for a particular working arrangement, a clearer route to partnership, support with further qualifications or greater flexibility around your hours. You may also have a bonus due or other considerations to work through before accepting an offer.

A recruiter can help you establish your priorities, understand the firm's position and approach those conversations professionally. Having someone experienced in recruitment negotiations can also make it easier to raise questions, explore expectations and address potential sticking points.

The aim isn't simply to secure the highest possible salary. It's to help you reach an agreement that reflects your experience, priorities and the value you can bring.

4. You have support throughout the process

An interview is an opportunity to demonstrate your suitability, but preparation and communication matter too.

A recruiter can help you prepare for meetings, explain what the firm is likely to want to discuss and identify the aspects of your experience worth emphasising.

Afterwards, they can gather feedback, clarify any concerns and keep communication moving between both sides. If questions arise or expectations differ, having someone who understands both parties can help address them constructively.

And when an offer arrives, you have someone to talk through the details with before making a decision.

5. You can have an honest conversation about your ambitions

Considering a move doesn't necessarily mean you're unhappy where you are. You might want to understand your market value, explore a progression opportunity or find out whether another firm could offer a better long-term fit.

A recruiter who understands your area of law and the firms in your market can give you a sounding board for those conversations. You can discuss your expectations, what matters most in your next role and what you hope to achieve over the coming years.

A good recruiter should give you an honest view of the opportunity, including any potential drawbacks or questions worth exploring before you proceed.

The aim is to help you make an informed decision, not simply to get you through the door.

6. The relationship can extend beyond one opportunity

Your career doesn't stand still, and the right move today may look very different from the right move in a few years.

Building a relationship with a recruiter who understands your experience and ambitions means you have someone to speak to as your priorities evolve.

Perhaps you're working towards partnership, looking to take on a leadership role or hoping to move into a firm with a different structure or client base.

A recruiter who knows you and your market can help you understand the opportunities available, identify potential next steps and keep you informed as the market changes.

That relationship can be valuable long after a particular vacancy has been filled.

Making the most of an opportunity

When you've discussed a role with a recruiter who knows the firm, you have more than details of a vacancy. You have access to their knowledge of the client, insight into the opportunity and support throughout the recruitment process.

For experienced solicitors, Senior Associates and Partners, where a career move can involve significant professional and personal considerations, that support can be particularly valuable.

Your recruiter should be more than the person who tells you about a job. They should be the person who helps you make the most of the opportunity.

At Austen Lloyd, I work with private practice lawyers across the South East and East Anglia, helping them navigate their next career move with honest advice, market insight and support throughout the process.

If we've discussed a role that interests you, I'll put my knowledge of the firm and the market to work for you, present your experience in the right context and support you from the initial introduction through to offer.

Because finding the right opportunity is one thing. Making the most of it is another.
